Royal Landscape is a tribute to two northern Nevada authors he admires: Robert Laxalt and Sessions S. Wheeler. One of Nevada’s most prominent writers, Laxalt typed all of his manuscripts on a Royal typewriter and authored Travels With My Royal: A Memoir of the Writing Life in 2001. Wheeler is well-known for his 1985 historical study Nevada’s Black Rock Desert. Reid used color and form to indirectly refer to the literary works by these men.
